Alex Gehring Interview
When it is possible, every year I try to attend the SXSW festival in Austin, one of my favorite festivals of all those I have gone. This year I was there and had the chance to watch and listen (and photograph!) a great noisy band called Ringo Deathstarr, they are from Austin Texas. I don’t know why I missed their show last year when they played at the MtyMx festival in Monterrey. Alex Gehring is the bass (and sometimes guitar) player and one of the vocals from the band, and I love her style, not only musically or by the way she holds the bass guitar but also visually in the way she dress and the stuff she likes (according to the images she uploads often to her tumblr). In a way she has the responsibility to take care of the image of the band, at least in the image they give in the stage in the way they dress, for her bandmates that’s not so important (I read that in a interview somewhere). Apart from her band, I wanted to know a bit more about what kind of worlds are in her mind and asked her a few questions about stuff like cats, ufos and weird experiences in supermarkets.

If you would have 10 cats how would you name them?
Recently a stray cat had 3 kittens in my bedroom and i kept them all! we named the mom cat Mom- not very creative, i know. The boy kitten was named Vasco after Vasco da Gama the explorer (there is also a Felt song named Vasco da Gama), and the two calico girls are The Sneak and Bug. I think i would have to meet the other cats before i named them!
If you could have the power of freezing time in which moments you would like to use it?
Playing at Fuji rock was really amazing, i didn’t want it to end! I would have frozen that moment on stage if i could. Also, when you have a huge bowl of ice cream in front of you and you’ve only just taken the first bite- that moment is pretty awesome too.
Have you ever went out to a party or to play in a concert with an outfit that you later regret? that you even thought what I was thinking?!
Oh i’m sure i have, but i can’t think of one specifically. The guys in the band give me a hard time about my outfits all the time but i’ve learned to ignore them. I also have a terrible memory which is probably for the best! There have definitely been a few times i’ve bent over on stage and flashed the crowd my underwear, that’s always good.
If one day you feel like you don’t like anybody to look at you in the street what would you wear?
Probably just my torn up jeans and a baggy tshirt! Maybe i wont shower so my stench will keep people away.
What’s your favorite natural phenomena?
the northern lights- i have never seen them in real life but i would really love to.
What was your weirdest experience in a supermarket?
When i was a kid i had a scotty dog named Winston who was a real mischievous trouble maker. He would always dig his way under our fence and we’d get calls from neighbors saying they had found him. One day we got a call from our neighborhood super market asking us to come get Winston because he was walking up and down the meat isle. Clever dog!
If you could give a cat a special superpower what it would be?
i wish my cats could talk, i bet they would be really funny.
Suddenly you see an UFO landing in front of you and an alien coming out, what would be the first words you would say to him?
i would probably faint and piss myself before being able to say anything.
